We live in the world of franchising where we need to create the repeatable - that’s core to your business. Where we see operational efficiencies, such as good habits and measuring accountabilities, being overlooked, is when we find people are not habitually following the formulas that we create. So, when they go outside those guidelines that’s where we see inefficiencies come into play. Yes, there are nuances to each market, and team skill set, but, for example, in every high- performing BFT studio, there is an operator dedicated to following the playbook while adding local insights and opportunities, not replacing or removing fundamental practices. They hold themselves and their teams accountable for their results. And, in turn, we hold ourselves accountable to improve the systems and playbooks we create. When all the systems are being followed, we can keep ourselves accountable because we’re getting all that data that’s saying, ‘this isn’t working across 30% of our network so we need to shape that’. It’s a measure of accountability which often gets overlooked across the world. Thankfully the objectives of the franchisee are very much aligned with those of the franchisor. PREPARING FOR EXPANSION I look for an appetite for experimentation, combined with the budgets to support it. Fortunately, I’ve always worked with well- funded and strong entrepreneurs who aren’t afraid to try a few things to scale businesses. It’s also important to instil patience and humility in the teams I work with. Everyone has to have a high tolerance for moving quickly and being comfortable with being uncomfortable.
